anger management in schools (and any organisation) is a shared responsibility

My earlier post argues that anger and rage are different and that it is rage (teacher/pupil) in the classroom that is the problem and not anger; in my opinion, where rage is involved it is not about the here-and-now (though it is always triggered by a here-and-now incident) and people are relating to one another as objects and not seeing themselves or others for the whole separate human beings that they are. Far too often these issues are personalised (pupil / teacher).
In my relational modeleveryone has a responsibility for creating the emotional environment in a school or any other environment….teacher / pupil / managers & policy makers. Relationship and integrity between these agencies is the key…where there is relationship, connection, mostly shared values and goals and an environment which treats everyone as vibrant human beings and not as ‘heads on legs’ there is much more chance of an approximation to harmony.
Further…being realistic, where there is a one-size-fits all programme (curriculum/prescribed practice) which treats all members as the same….there will be a large number of students/clients who will be regulalry traumatised by it. Government ministers, policy makers, schools & other organisations have to be more imaginative about what constitutes education/service and how it is delivered.

That’s probably quite a way off! For now I think it is necessary to give as much attention to encouraging functional relationships between all parties in schools/organisations as is given to the curriculum; to build an optimum emotional environment where all human needs get met and where everyone experiences their natural organismic hunger and joy for learning . RELATIONSHIP is the vehicle for learning / change, not the curriculum/prescribed practice.

*also delivered ‘in house’ at conferences and for voluntary and statutory organisations

a CPD training for helping professionals from a variety of disciplines including counselling, psychotherapy, youth and social work, mental health, emergency services, prisons, hospices, advocacy and other helping professionals who wish to deepen their understanding of, and practice in, working with these phenomena

Difficulties in acknowledging, processing and being with others’ anger abound in our society generally and can be experienced by practitioners. I believe that these difficulties originate from a range of misunderstandings about its nature.

Theoretical models are invited which invite personal exploration and dialogue, supports practitioners to deepen their understanding of their own anger and rage processes which in turn support their work with clients. A sense of community is fostered which helps to dissolve cultural, familial and professional shame about these issues.

Some crucial principles that underpin the models:-

Ÿ  are different psychological and emotional processes

Ÿ  serve different functions

Ÿ  have different relational needs

Ÿ  require different interventions and, most importantly require an empathic Vs technical / programmatic approach

This training offers:-

Ÿ  information about anger and rage

Ÿ  theoretical models that facilitate the understanding and processing of anger and rage including a brief relational intervention model for rage and (by request) a preventative approach to managing rage in residential settings

Ÿ  discussion about how cognitive/expressive/feminist and empathic therapy models can support or hinder work with clients

Ÿ  small and large group discussions enable participants to explore their personal and professional experience of, and relationship to, anger and rage

Ÿ  opportunities to integrate learning through skills practice

Ÿ  a supervision slot for the exploration of workplace and practice issues (may include facilitator demonstration)

Comments from previous participants

‘Valuable learning….exciting and fun training…very useful models, superb applications……found others’ ideas stimulating and challenging…..explored anger in more depth than I ever have before…..excellent content and delivery, style…good to have well defined and clear models….I went away with my mind buzzing (which I have to say hasn’t happened for a long time, CPD can be a bit bland), but your workshop was so thought provoking and energetic… ….excellent

Implications for practice

‘Lots of really useful information I can translate into practice…..the distinction between anger and rage is really useful…..hugely informed my understanding of anger and rage and what my angry and/or rageful clients need in relationship with me…the concept of ‘cold rage’ is one that explains so much for me personally and for some of those I work with…. really useful underscoring of my work, but also new ways of working specifically with anger and rage; and a reminder that I’m actually doing ok’

Comments about Sue Parker Hall

‘Sue is a warm and safe woman who facilitated this group excellently……Sue’s belief and passion in the subject was obvious and inspirational.’

Final word

‘This is very important work…..the best workshop I’ve ever been to.’
